Om Ali, Egyptian bread pudding recipe.

Om Ali dessert is a delicious dessert made of Rokak or puff pastry dough mixed with milk, sugar and nuts. Om Ali sounds a ridiculous name for a dessert, but this name has a historical background.

Back to the 13th century, an Egyptian queen called "Shagerat El Dor". She was an intelligent and beautiful woman. She ruled Egypt after the death of her husband, but the people got angry to be ruled by a woman. She had to marry a new husband and to rule Egypt behind the scenes. But her husband took over the rule. As a result, she planned to kill him. Unfortunately, her crime was revealed and she was sent to prison. The first wife of her husband "Om Ali", sent her servants to beat Shagerat El Dor until death. To celebrate this victory, she distributed this dessert over the people of the land.

Apart from its ferocious history, Om Ali is one of the most delicious dessert in my life. At the same time, it is very easy to make. Let's do it;

Ingredients:

  • Rokak dough, or puff pastry, or mille feuille.

  • 1 liter hot milk (makes 2 small casseroles).

  • 4-5 tablespoon sugar.

  • 2 tablespoon cornstarch (one for each casserole).

  • Small butter cubes.

  • Shredded coconut, raisin, and minced peanuts or any nuts you love.

Preparation:

  • Grease Rokak dough or puff pastry with tiny amount of oil, then put them in the oven at high temperature for 2 min or until they are crunchy gold. For mille feuille, skip this step.
